Google My mind like most americans these days is the economy, job losses, and companies making drastic cuts in pay.
I still have a job but the company keeps cutting my hours. I have heard rumors the company wants to cut out full time positions and have 80% part time. If I had a set work schedule I could look for opportunities to make money with the extra time. However I am told this is not an option. If I try to say I will work a specific time or days then I am punished with even less work hours. Only by having a 24/7 availablibility can I count on as many hours as possible. Some days I work 7 am to 4 pm or 2 pm to 11 pm, short days 5 pm to 10:30 or 2 pm to 7:30 or anywhere in between
I have an embroidery shop in my home but due to the varying hours of my job I cannot have an open schedule. My business could help me make up for the the loss of income but due to schedule problems keeps this impossible.
I also do crafts which I sell at craft shows that depend on my vacation time. My husband works with me in creating the crafts. I have wanted to locate a format online that would allow me to sell the items on line. We are working on getting a web site going to enble us to sell.
However to change the pace of this message and get back to my thoughts on the economy.
Many years ago there existed a cottage industry. The land owner would make arrangments with specific peasants to assist in specific needs in taking like wool from the sheep to fabric. One person would take the wool to clean and card. Another would take the carded wool to dye, then someone would spin the strands into yarn, another would take the yarn to weave into fabric. The owner would then sell the fabric. The earnings would support the people.
I think a simular process could be reborn. I think in terms of some of my crafting. I have made christmas stockings from scratch. Cut out the shape of the sock, the embroider a design on one side of the stocking. After cleaning up the embroidery take the piece sew together. I have created a design that allows a top that can be put into am embroidery hoop to personalize. What if we had a person that cut out the sock, another do the emboidery, then another assemble and sew. Then everyone share in the proceeds.
I use this as examples or food form thought. But think we could take the idea and assist people in such a process.
I see ads that promise to help people make opportunities but want what could seem a lot of money. With money so tight even $100. or $5 can seem like a lot of money to fork out. Is there a way in which people can just help each other in a positive way?
Most towns have empty lots they own. Why not put some of them to work. We also have many senior citizens with a whole lot on there way. We have problems with childhood obsity and people who do not know how to grow their own food. These same towns have Farmers Markets. It would seem that we could use the lots to teach kids and people how to grow their own food. Some of the businesses could help donate seed, potting soil, tools to assist in the process. We could mix the senior citizens and children in growing the vegestables. We could also get some of the unemployed involved. They could sell some of the produce at the farmers market. Water for the gardens can also be donated.
My husband and I are taking 55 gallon drums, recycled, turning them into rain barrels to catch the rain. We have installed a spiggot on the bottom of the barrel to enable us to use the water to water our garden. We have placed screening on the top of the barrel to keep out leaves, twigs, bugs, etc out of the water. We have run into some problems in distribution of these items. But such a system could help in the garden project mentioned above.
Would lke so get your thoughts on these ideas.
